Artist in Residence 2017 Project

My project goal is the creation of my book, Cascadia:  a Natural History through Art and Alphabet.  This will be an exploration of various native plant, animal, and land features of our coastal bioregion.  A 3-dimensional art piece will accompany each letter of the alphabet for a total of 26 pieces.  My goal by the end of the residency is to have the text and art components completed as a fine art picture book, ready for a unique exhibition at the gallery and ready to present to publishers for print.  I see my book as the first of many creative projects in my future path as an author/artist.

Artist Biography

Christy Chandler is a self taught mixed media artist living with her menagerie of furred and feathered friends in the redwood forest of Trinidad, California.

Christy received her B.A. degree in Anthropology from Humboldt State University in 2003. It was during these years of discovering a stillness and profound connection with the natural world that she first translated her observations into form on the canvas. This was the birth of a continuing unfolding of paintings and sculpture depicting our human journey.  Her work is rooted in the symbiosis of the “outer” elemental world and the “inner” experiential process of alchemy as a conscious vehicle of healing and transformation that enables the growth process toward wholeness.

Currently, she works part time for the Humboldt County Library.  After many years working in the book world, she is excited to bring her creative hand to a new medium of book creation.

Christy is also the creator of Mermaid’s Harvest, a line of locally crafted artisanal herb and spice infused sea salts.  From product creation to packaging, artwork and design, it is a challenging but exciting creative venture that allows limitless creativity and the opportunity to bring this edible art to the marketplace.

Artist Statement

The chemistry of multi-textured acrylic, paper,  and natural materials such as bone, spider webs, butterfly wings, or redwood bark allows me to speak a language through color, texture and dimension centered on an organic and expansive life-centered philosophy.

The act of creating art in various forms is my medicine and alchemy in action. The figures and symbols within my art represent universal human archetypes and the passages we individually and collectively experience in our lives. I listen to the natural world and strive to see the same symbols within organic materials:  the inherent strength of a spider’s web, the commitment to home found in the design of the nest, or the promise of flight in the wings of the smallest insect.  I find a deep peace, healing and purpose in the marriage of the abstract and material worlds.

My mission and responsibility as an artist is not merely the creation of a tangible finished piece of art, but to continually touch and translate the creative pulse that governs all of life.
